Meet Your Doctor
Barry E. Brenner MD PhD
Founder, Andover Internal Medicine PLLC
Board-Certified in Internal Medicine & Emergency Medicine
Barry E. Brenner MD PhD created Andover Internal Medicine to bring expert, compassionate, and timely care to patients who want a true personal relationship with their physician. He believes medical care should be unhurried, direct, and centered on the patient — not on insurance companies.
This practice is not the typical “DPC clinic” people may have encountered elsewhere.
It is built around advanced same-day diagnostics, a full in-office laboratory, and an in-office pharmacy. Patients receive immediate evaluations, rapid testing, and most medications on the spot — eliminating extra visits, pharmacy delays, unnecessary phone calls, and the endless deductibles and bills common in traditional care.
Dr. Brenner brings decades of experience from emergency departments, intensive care units, and academic medical centers. He has served as a residency program director, department chair, and national lecturer, with extensive expertise in both everyday primary care and complex diagnostic challenges.
His emergency medicine background — combined with laboratory medicine training — gives him a unique ability to rapidly identify and treat conditions that typically require multiple visits, referrals, or long waits. The rapid diagnostics he always wished for in the emergency department are now available in his office, along with an in-office pharmacy that allows patients to leave with the medications they need immediately.
At Andover Internal Medicine, he combines Compassionate ✦ Clever ✦ Care with advanced in-office diagnostics, same-day appointments, and direct access by text, email, or phone. His approach is simple and original: provide the kind of care every patient deserves — care that is timely, thoughtful, and genuinely personal.
PERSONAL STATEMENT BY BARRY BRENNER MD PhD
Throughout my years training residents, I always included a personal statement on my program’s website. It was honest, direct, and reflected my philosophy of mentorship and care. I asked many applicants whether they had read it — because it revealed who I was, what I valued, and how I practiced medicine.
Today, as I return to private practice, I offer you a new personal statement.
My practice is different by design. It brings together decades of experience in emergency medicine, internal medicine, advanced diagnostics, and teaching. But more importantly, it restores something medicine has lost: a genuine relationship between a patient and a physician who knows you, thinks deeply about your health, and remains available when you need guidance the most.
If you choose to join my practice, you will understand not just what I do, but how I care, why I think the way I do, and the commitment I make to every patient.
(And yes — I will probably ask if you read this.)
This practice begins with the timeless principles we outlined together:
Compassion. Cleverness. Care.
Compassion in listening and presence.
Cleverness in diagnostic thinking, insight, and advanced reasoning — especially when symptoms are confusing or the evidence is thin. Willingness to think out of the box.
Care in the fullest sense of the word: thoughtful, continuous, and unhurried.
For decades, physicians and patients built a model of trust that corporate medicine gradually dismantled.
Here, we rebuild it — simply, honestly, directly.
The Physician’s Promise — A Message to My Patients
From the very beginning of medicine, long before insurance companies, claim forms, or corporate metrics, there was a simple understanding: a patient and a physician, working together in trust.
That bond is as old as Hippocrates, as steady as Galen, as fearless as Jenner, as devoted as William Osler, and as brilliant as Harvey Cushing.
These were the doctors who believed — truly believed — that healing meant listening, thinking, examining, and caring.
Their loyalty was to the patient, not to a corporation.
Their duty was to the truth of the illness, not to the demands of a quarterly report.
But somewhere along the way, the system changed.
Delays replaced access.
Denials replaced judgment.
Deterrents replaced compassion.
And non-physicians — guided by unrealistic metrics and profit incentives — took control of decisions that only doctors should make.
We all paid the price. Patients suffered. Doctors burned out. Healthcare bent under the weight of bureaucracy and broke in too many places. Not because physicians stopped caring — but because the system stopped supporting care.
Yet the spirit of Osler and Cushing never disappeared. It simply waited for a moment — a revolution — a return.
Direct Primary Care is that return. It is the restoration of medicine to its rightful owners:
the patient who seeks help and the physician who gives it.
No delays. No denials. No deterrents. No meaningless metrics. No non-physicians deciding what is “medically necessary.”
Just medicine — pure, honest, immediate, personal.
The kind Hippocrates would recognize.
The kind Jenner risked his life to advance.
The kind Osler dignified.
The kind Cushing perfected.
The kind you deserve. The kind we all deserve.
This is not just a new payment model.
It is a renewal of the physician’s promise —
that your doctor will truly know you, will see you when you’re sick and when you’re well, will advocate for you without pause or permission, and will practice with clarity, integrity, and compassion.
And as John F. Kennedy once said, “We stand today on the edge of a new frontier.’
In healthcare, that frontier is not defined by technology or regulation —but by a simple, timeless truth:
The best care happens when a physician is free to care.
So let us begin, together —patients and physicians —a new chapter in the old story of
A chapter where trust is restored, access is near immediate, diagnostics are in your doctor’s hands, and your health — not a corporation’s profit — determines every decision.
This is medicine reborn. This is the future we choose. This is the care we have always deserved.

In-Office Pharmacy
At Andover Internal Medicine, patients receive their medications at the time of their visit — safely, transparently, and at near-wholesale pricing. No waiting at the pharmacy. No delays. No confusion. No extra trips.
We purchase medications directly from national wholesalers and dispense them in the office at near-wholesale cost, without pharmacy mark-ups or insurance hassles. Many medications are up to 90% lower than traditional retail prices or insurance copays.
Because I am both the physician and the dispenser, I can ensure that medications are correct, appropriate, safe, and immediately available.
Advantages of the In-Office Pharmacy
Immediate access to medication at the point of care
Transparent pricing without surprise charges or denials
Wholesale costs passed directly to the patient
Improved adherence — patients start treatment right away
Ideal for seniors who struggle with multiple pharmacy trips
Ideal for urgent concerns where rapid treatment affects outcomes
Examples of What We Carry
Your formulary will continue to expand, but these categories are standard for a high-quality DPC in-office pharmacy:
Antibiotics (oral, topical, ophthalmic, otic)
Antivirals, including single-dose influenza therapy when appropriate
Steroids (oral burst packs, inhalers, topical formulations)
Respiratory medications (albuterol, inhaled corticosteroids, spacer devices, peak flow meters)
Cardiovascular medications (antihypertensives, lipid-lowering agents)
Diabetes medications (metformin, selected GLP-1 options when permitted, insulin when appropriate)
Men’s health medications (PDE5 inhibitors, testosterone adjuncts when appropriate)
Pain and musculoskeletal medications
GI medications (PPI, H2 blockers, antispasmodics such as Levsin, anti-nausea agents)
Dermatologic medications
Allergy medications
Emergency medications (EpiPens, nebulized therapies, steroids)
We tailor our formulary to patient needs, clinical patterns, and local pricing.
Pricing Philosophy
Unlike some practices where medication mark-ups are a revenue engine, our model is intentionally different:
Medications are priced near-wholesale
Minimal dispensing fee (if any)
No margin stacking
No insurance billing
This ensures that patients save money while receiving safer, faster, and more complete care.
“At Andover Internal Medicine, you walk out with the right diagnosis and the right medication in your hand. No pharmacy lines, no delays, no insurance denials, and no confusion. Just safe, effective care — immediately.”
A full medication list is available upon request.
Asthma and Pulmonary Care Connection
For patients with asthma and chronic lung disease, many respiratory treatments — including inhalers, spacers, and peak flow meters — are available immediately through our in-office pharmacy.
THIS IS NOT INSURANCE
Direct Primary Care (DPC) is a membership-based medical practice — not an insurance plan.
Your membership gives you exceptional access, extended time with your physician, direct communication, and advanced diagnostics inside my office.
I strongly recommend that every patient maintain:
• A high-deductible or catastrophic insurance plan (for hospitalizations, surgeries, and emergencies). Most people these are infrequent events.
• Medicare Part A & B (or equivalent) if eligible
• Optional supplemental coverage for rare, high-cost events
DPC removes delays, denials, and corporate barriers —
but the high deductible insurance protects you financially for events outside a private medical office.
The safest, most responsible combination for your health — and your finances — is:
Direct Primary Care membership + catastrophic coverage.
Together, they ensure you are fully protected while receiving the kind of care modern insurance systems can no longer provide.
What Your Membership Includes
Unlimited visits
Direct physician access
Same-day/next-day appointments
Comprehensive diagnostics
Advanced lab testing
Procedures (varies by membership tier)
Transparent, predictable monthly fees
What Your Membership Does Not Include
Hospital bills
Emergency department care
Specialist care fees. The specialists to whom I refer are hand-picked and particularly outstanding. I have endeavored to obtain a special cost for my patients for their initial evaluation, not including procedures.
Surgery
Imaging at outside centers (CT, MRI, ultrasound — except your Gold MRI benefit)
Prescriptions purchased outside the office
Costs from labs or facilities not run inside my practice
✅
Catastrophic Insurance Is Strongly Recommended
Even with excellent primary care, every patient still needs:
A high-deductible / catastrophic plan
to protect against:
Major trauma
Stroke or heart attack
Cancer treatment
Surgery
Hospital admissions
Specialist referrals
Expensive medications or biologics
Catastrophic unexpected events
DPC keeps day-to-day medical care affordable, accessible, and personal.
Catastrophic insurance protects you from rare, expensive medical events.
Together, they provide complete coverage at a fraction of the cost of traditional insurance.
How Direct Primary Care Works With Insurance
Your membership covers all primary care services in my office.
Insurance (or a high-deductible plan) covers hospital care and specialists.
You can still use insurance for medications, imaging centers, and outside labs if needed.
Your membership has no claim forms, no prior authorizations, no deductibles, no co-pays, no denials.
Many patients pair DPC with:
Bronze ACA plans
High-deductible HSA-compatible plans
Christian health-share ministries
Employer reimbursement programs
This combined model is usually far less expensive than traditional insurance — with far better access and continuity.
